Rock-a-bye songs & Familiar words

When the end of the day includes time with little ones – fresh from their baths and ready for bedtime stories – it is a precious, precious time indeed! And if Little Mr.’s voice requests “Snuggle time with Nana!” there are no words adequate to explain how much I want to capture and hold on to those moments.

To make it even better, the chance to rock Little Sister to sleep after being separated from her for several months was almost too much to hope for. Would she remember me enough to relax and rest?

There was some squirming and stretching. There was pushing back and looking around the darkened room. There was restlessness until … I started to softly sing the song that I’ve sung to her since those first rock-a-bye times when she was a tiny one. And then, before the first line of the familiar song was finished, she cuddled into my arms, nestled close and rested. A priceless moment!

I’m ever grateful to her Mommy for keeping that song fresh in her mind.

I felt much the same kind of comforting, reassuring rest when I read Isaiah 9 this morning. Familiar words, etched deep in my memory, carrying with them truth that holds me secure.

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shined.  You have multiplied the nation; you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest.

… For unto us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace

Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end,

… to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore.

…The zeal of the Lord Almighty will do this!

I can nestle in, snuggle in, and be at rest in that!

Familiar words: comforting, reassuring, calming. What familiar words bring rest to your soul?
