Listen up!

Sometimes I am slow to hear. I admit it. But, repeated words draw my attention. So when I was reading Jeremiah and I kept seeing the word “listen”, I started paying attention.

Over and over in chapter 26 & 27, I found that word:

…perhaps they will listen

…if you do not listen

…if you do not listen

…you have not listened

And then later

…so, do NOT listen

…do NOT listen

…do NOT listen

…do NOT listen

It’s obvious in this part of the Biblical record that incorrect listening brought bad judgment, evil actions and dire consequences. First God spoke and they didn’t listen and then when they chose to listen, it was to the wrong voices. Probably the most startling part of this scenario is that the people were being warned not to listen to their prophets because these supposed spiritual leaders were misrepresenting God. The words they attributed to God were not consistent with the message that God had really given.

God was giving a message difficult to hear and the corrupted spiritual leaders were not faithfully passing along that message to the people. So God was telling His people, “DO NOT LISTEN to those who speak inconsistently to My Word.”

Reading this made me think of the ancient saying “We are formed by the speeches we hear.”

That begs the question: Who/what am I listening to? Who/what is forming me? How many of the speeches I listen to are consistent with His voice? Do I measure influencing voices against the eternal Truth of God’s Word?

Am I being selective and intentional as I receive messages from

books?

music?

talk radio?

screen time?

conversations?

speakers at church?

personal time in the Word?

Not coincidentally, the readings for today in my One Year Bible included Psalm 85:8 –

I will listen to what God the Lord will say: He promises peace to His people, His saints – but let them not return to folly.

Tune my ears, Lord, so that I hear You completely and respond to You quickly.

Thanks, Mark, for your faithful handling of God’s Word to bring encouragement to His people!
